Organize My Resource Room

Setting up my Resource Room

Read about how I set up my resource room. Even though my classroom is small, I maximized the space to make it functional and effective for teaching. I usually work with 5 students at a time, hence the 5 grey chairs around the circular table. I love that I have a whiteboard behind where I sit. SO useful. I placed a word wall on half of the white board. Here are the letters for the word wall letter headers: Word Wall Letters (available in English and French). I hung sight words/vocabulary words on rings in alphabetical order and we review one every class. My little kiddies also refer to the upper and lower case letters when printing.

Behind my teaching area, I have set up a ‘words we know’ word wall where I post the words that we have already studied. The header comes in the word wall pack from TPT and the sight words, I purchased at Dollar Tree! I was trying to go with a burlap/farmhouse theme. My bulletin board borders are from Micheals and I laminated them to be able to reuse them. Below my word wall, are bins of short readers from RAZ kids (I highly recommend this levelled reading program!)

I store any writing material (pencils, erasers, highlighters) in the center of my table as well as a few colouring crayons. I bought these REALLY cute rolling drawers at Marshall’s and I store any whiteboards, math graphic organizers, multiplication sheets, personal dictionaries and any other manipulatives the students are taught to use during the year. They know they can help themselves.

To display students IEP goals, I review the IEP with the student, and we summarize their goals in kid language, and write them on. a paper, which I then glue to their classroom desks. If you’d like a guided writing template on how to do this, check out my IEP at a Glance and Student Goal Sheets. To include the whole class in the activity, I have the other students write goals that they would like achieved over the year, and write them down if they wish.

Lastly for vocabulary, we have weekly theme words posted in this Scholastics pocket chart. I pick a non-fiction book every 2 to 3 weeks and I plan many activities around this. This week’s book was Why do Leaves Change Colour by Harper Collins. Here is a list of books that I will use throughout the year, Let’s Read and Find Out Science Collection (I highly recommend these books; they capture student interest and are good for all elementary school grades!) As an example, we learned about how different species of trees have different shaped/coloured leaves. We went outside to pick/identify leaves which will then serve for a descriptive writing activity later on. More about that in another post!

I made these word cards myself by hand, but if you would be interested in perhaps having a copy, please let me know and I will try and make them digital.

I also have burlap colour posters available for the students to reference when writing. All of these vocabulary words are used as references for the children when writing sentences/stories. Every time I see my group, I take out my pointer and we read all of the words of the week. More about my reading program in my reading post.

I also have a math section in my classroom! This includes a Number of the Day poster (burlap style or green themed available) and a giant hundreds chart.

Lastly, my Resource teacher planner <3 Wouldn’t be able to live without it! I like to write a quick note of all my lessons and any activities or meetings that are coming up. I love this one because its made for teaching resource.
